This tranquil monument honors Sanghamitta Theri, a pioneering figure in Sri Lankan Buddhist history. 📜 Who was Sanghamitta Theri? Born in 280 BC in Ujjeni, India, Sanghamitta was the daughter of Emperor Ashoka and his queen Vidisa Devi. She became a Buddhist nun at age of 18 and played a pivotal role in spreading Buddhism beyond India. In 249 BC, she journeyed to Sri Lanka, bringing with her a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree from Bodh Gaya—the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Sanghamitta also established the Bhikkhunī Sangha (order of Buddhist nuns) in Sri Lanka, ensuring that women could fully participate in monastic life.
