¿Mañana o Noche? La Verdad sobre la Pastilla para la Presión Después de los 60
Morning or Night? The Truth About Blood Pressure Medication After 60 Do you take your blood pressure medication in the morning because you've always done it that way? Or did someone tell you that taking it at night is better for your heart? After 60, the timing of your medication can influence comfort, adherence, and the onset of symptoms, but there's no single best time for everyone. In this video, Dr. Ana Beltrán explains how blood pressure changes over 24 hours. It usually drops while we sleep and rises again upon waking, although this pattern can be altered by sleep, stress, pain, hydration, illness, and the type of treatment. Therefore, a single reading isn't enough to determine when to take your blood pressure medication. You'll also learn about orthostatic hypotension, a sustained drop of at least 20 mmHg in systolic pressure or 10 mmHg in diastolic pressure during the first three minutes after standing up. It can cause dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, or a feeling of faintness. After age 60, these symptoms should be recorded and discussed with a doctor, especially if they occur upon waking. Is it better to take medication at night? The TIME trial compared morning and evening doses of antihypertensive drugs and found no overall cardiovascular advantage of one over the other. The practical takeaway is that medication timing should be tailored to the prescribed treatment, tolerance, symptoms, and routine of each individual patient. Never change the time on your own. For seven days, use a validated upper arm blood pressure monitor. Rest for five minutes and take two readings in the morning, before breakfast and medication, and two in the afternoon or evening. Record your blood pressure, pulse, the time you take your blood pressure medication, and any dizziness, fatigue, or unsteadiness. Bringing this record to your appointment helps your doctor assess whether your medication provides adequate 24-hour coverage. Blood pressure can also be affected by a bad night's sleep, a full bladder, recent exercise, talking during the measurement, or incorrect cuff placement. Look for recurring patterns, not isolated readings. After age 60, monitoring symptoms is just as important as recording the numbers. ⏱️ TIMELINE 00:00 Is there an ideal time for everyone? 01:50 The circadian rhythm of blood pressure 05:52 Morning sickness and orthostatic hypotension 10:20 Nighttime protection and morning surge 14:22 What to record before your doctor appointment 18:10 How to personalize your medication schedule ⚠️ MEDICAL WARNING Do not stop, double, move up, or delay your blood pressure medication without medical authorization. Consult your doctor if orthostatic hypotension recurs, causes a fall, or is accompanied by fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden weakness, or speech difficulties. The medication schedule may depend on the type of drug, its duration, other treatments, and your overall health.
