The ships that fed every blast furnace on this channel. Eighty-five percent of the iron ore that built American steel moved across the Great Lakes in vessels designed to carry maximum cargo with minimal bulkheads. In November the Gales brought 30-foot waves and 70-mile-per-hour winds. The ore had to move. The furnaces could not stop. The captains went anyway.
