Tenerife - The Leprosarium, Abades 🌵

Between the village of Abades and Punta de Abona, in the municipality of Arico, there is this group of more than 35 abandoned buildings. In the 1940s, construction began on this area for the sick and to isolate them from the population, with houses, a hospital, a crematorium, schools, administrative buildings and a church. Thanks to the advance of pharmaceuticals (and the change in the public mentality), the Abades Sanatorium became unnecessary and never received any lepers.
