Twitter @juangangel Zantedeschia aethiopica, commonly known as calla lily, Ethiopian calla lily, Ethiopian arum, water lily, cartouche, duck flower, or pitcher flower, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to South Africa, cultivated as an ornamental for its showy white spathes. It is a perennial plant in the Araceae family, the most robust and widely naturalized of the Zantedeschia genus. Of tropical origin, it is frost-tolerant. It reaches 150 cm in height. It has a large, oblong rhizome with basal, sagittate, and long-petiolated leaves. It produces 2 or 3 "flowers" per plant, which are, strictly speaking, erect inflorescences on a spadix 4 to 7 cm long, surrounded by a funnel-shaped spathe (modified bract). They are monoecious. It re-blooms each year, offering its flowers around mid-spring. It requires a lot of water when it is blooming, and rather little after it has finished flowering. To accelerate the cycle, the flower should be cut before producing seeds, thus allowing it to bloom again later that year. The entire plant is toxic and should therefore not be ingested. Its active ingredient is calcium oxalate crystals, cyanogenic heterosides, saponins, and alkaloids. The sap is highly irritating. Clinical signs are both local and general. Local signs (due to direct contact) include irritation of the skin, lips, and oral mucosa. General signs include vomiting, diarrhea, mydriasis, drowsiness, coma, and death.
