Ancient Paris: Exploring the Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre I SLICE HISTORY
"With its 2,185 monuments, today, Paris is the world's most touristic capital city! Each part of the riverbank and each neighbourhood bears witness to this tremendous wealth. But in the city of light, although now rare, there are also vestiges of the Gallo-Roman era. Just a few metres from Place Monge, the Arènes de Lutèce are one of the oldest monuments in Paris. This fabulous Gallo-Roman amphitheatre, capable of accommodating 17,000 people, with a 42-metre long stage, would house theatre shows, gladiatorial combats, and animal fights. The Thermes de Cluny, built a few years later, were a favourite meeting place. They were a massive thermal bath complex, which had an impressive underground system that stretched for over 10,000 m2, twice the surface of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. All around the Ile de la Cité, an 18-metre high wall provided protection from barbarian invasions. And finally, on the site of the Pantheon, was the forum, which covered over 15,700 m2 and was the beating heart of the Gallo-Roman city of Lutetia. Using 3D imagery, reconstitutions and interviews with historians and archaeologists, this documentary will tell the story of Gallo-Roman Paris and uncover the vestiges of ancient Paris: Lutetia.
