This 1952 color documentary about Algeria is much more than a travel film: a striking testament to how colonial France staged its empire. This French Newsreel film does not necessarily reflect the actual daily lives of Algerians, but rather the idealized and politically motivated vision that the French colonial power wished to present. Through spectacular color footage, the documentary takes viewers on a journey through Algiers, Constantine, Tlemcen, Bou Saâda, Laghouat, Touggourt, and Tamanrasset. The camera films the Casbah, the markets, the oases, the mosques, religious ceremonies, desert caravans, and the magnificent landscapes of the Sahara with a constant fascination for the “exoticism” and contrasts of the Algerian landscape. The commentary also emphasizes the infrastructure, agriculture, and development projects undertaken by colonial France, reflecting a desire to showcase “the French legacy” in Algeria. Today, these images and this narrative must be placed within their historical context: that of a colonial system then facing profound challenges, a few years before the start of the Algerian War of Independence. This archive thus constitutes a valuable testimony not only to Algeria in the 1950s, but also to the way in which colonial France presented its territories through documentary film and newsreels. 👍 If you enjoy this archive, subscribe to INA Voyages and also check out the INA Official, INA History, INA Society, INA Reports, INA Paris Vintage, INA Arditube, INA Humor, and INA Mireille Dumas channels. **** Information about comments ***** On YouTube channels, you are free to express your opinion, even if it is critical.
