In 2023, nearly 5,000 types of medicines were out of stock or in short supply in pharmacies. These include essential drugs: antibiotics, cancer treatments, and anti-infectives—medications that were, until recently, reliably available. Why are we facing this situation? Who is responsible? Julie Lotz conducted an in-depth investigation for over a year to answer these questions, focusing specifically on a vital medication: the antibiotic most consumed by the French, amoxicillin. Last winter, millions of boxes were missing, leaving patients untreated for ear infections, tonsillitis, and sinusitis. Were some pharmacists hoarding excess stock, depriving other pharmacies of supply? Or did pharmaceutical companies fail to produce enough to meet nationwide demand? Does the government still have any power when faced with these powerful industrial players? Cash Investigation also looked into innovative treatments for cystic fibrosis, which affects over 100,000 people worldwide. For some patients, life has significantly improved thanks to a medication produced by Vertex Laboratories. However, this American company limits access to its treatment to countries willing to pay a high price, even at the cost of denying patients life-changing care.
