PTC One Near Texas: Heavy Rain and Flooding Threat Continues

Potential Tropical Cyclone One is near the Texas coast, but the main threat is heavy rain and flooding. Flash flooding is already ongoing near Houston and Southeast Texas, with more coastal rain bands possible today into Wednesday. Potential Tropical Cyclone One may become Tropical Storm Arthur as it moves into the western Gulf and tracks northeast toward the upper Texas coast and Louisiana. Whether it gets a name or not, the Texas impacts do not change much. This is mainly a glorified rainmaker. At lunchtime Tuesday, flash flooding was ongoing on the north and west sides of the Houston metro, including areas near The Woodlands, Conroe, Cypress, and Prairie View, where 5 to 6 inches of rain fell in only a few hours. Flash flood warnings were also ongoing in parts of Southeast Texas near Silsbee, Buna, Fred, Wildwood, and nearby communities. Heavy rain earlier today also impacted parts of the Coastal Bend, with additional rain moving back onshore near Rockport, Seadrift, Port Lavaca, and the Crossroads/Coastal Plains. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect from Sargent through Galveston to Sabine Pass. Tropical storm force wind gusts over 40 mph are possible along the upper Texas coast over the next couple of days, but this is not expected to be a major wind event for Texas. If the rain bands stay offshore, parts of coastal Texas may get a break. If they sit over Houston, Galveston, Beaumont, the Golden Triangle, or nearby coastal areas, flooding problems may develop quickly. The Weather Prediction Center continues a flash flooding risk today and tonight across the Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle, and Far East Texas. Wednesday’s flood risk remains focused on Southeast Texas and the Golden Triangle, depending on how far west the rain bands reach. By Thursday, PTC One should be moving away from Texas, but additional storm chances may return to North Texas, Texoma, East Texas, Southeast Texas, and nearby areas. Friday into the weekend, another weak front may bring scattered showers and storms back to the eastern two-thirds of Texas. Western Texas turns hot again this week. Wednesday and Thursday may bring triple-digit temperatures to parts of West Texas, the Panhandle, Far West Texas, the Permian Basin, and the Big Country, while East and Southeast Texas stay cooler but very humid under clouds and rain.
