How to: Decent Espresso Conditional Programming (Move on if, Max Weight, Flow Rate Target)
Here are some safety conditions you can utilize when dialing in to ensure your shots are much more drinkable! These are maximum weight limits in each step of a profile during fill/preinfusion and flowrate targets/limits towards the middle/end of your shot. This ensures your grind or prep doesn't have to be super perfect as the profile can compensate in some manner to "save" your shot. This of course depends on what equipment you are using and what coffee you are drinking and is not a solution for properly dialing in your grind settings. The point here is to make the "bad" shots less "bad" and these settings allow you to do just that. In my experience, I would rather have the profile skip preinfusion or fill and opt for a target pressure ramp. I suggest you use a proper grind size but these conditionals are a great way to get less "bad" results especially when you are dialing in and are too coarse. Utilizing these safety settings even if you are dialed in can also be beneficial, especially in situations where you may make mistakes such as underdosing or failing to prep your puck AKA you're not fully awake. I showcase this using the Londinium profile and make a quick comparison to the Cremina profile. A similar result can be achieved by utilizing pressure/flow limiters (software OPV) within each step but I find you get much more control by creating another step like the Flow Rate limit (step #6) on the Londinium profile. The maximum weight per step can be related to how when a direct manual lever is lifted up and water is introduced you can begin pushing the lever down immediately if your grind size is too coarse. The flowrate target and move on if steps are very similar to how hard you press down when you are building pressure on a lever and how you can modulate that.
