Into Tongariro’s Hidden Wilderness | Our Final Night in Otuere Hut

In this first episode of our Tongariro National Park, just before the fire, a wilderness adventure, we venture into one of the least explored and rarely filmed areas of Tongariro — the wild backcountry surrounding Te Mari Crater and Sulphur Lagoon. This is authentic, off-track New Zealand hiking at its best before the fire — remote, rugged, and breathtakingly untouched. Day One takes us from the Desert Road car park along the scenic Waihohonu Track to the popular Waihohonu Hut, where we meet the wonderful, on-fire hut warden Jo, fill in our intentions book, and share a few laughs (and some “special” gummies) before pushing on into the dark. Our goal: reach the Otuere Hut, a true 1970s backcountry classic, soon to be removed — making this one of its final nights ever captured on film. This episode showcases the raw, unfiltered spirit of New Zealand’s wilderness hiking — muddy alpine tracks, vast volcanic landscapes, and the thrill of arriving at a lonely hut under the stars after hours on the trail. It’s a genuine backcountry experience — no shortcuts, no crowds, just adventure, endurance, and the freedom of wild places.
