Two of Australia's smelters have been handed a taxpayer-funded lifeline. International metals producer Nyrstar will get $135 million to keep its smelters in Hobart and Port Pirie in South Australia running. Tasmania and South Australia are kicking in $25m and $55m respectively, with the federal government tipping in the balance to rescue the zinc and lead plants. But their future isn't guaranteed.
