When we hear the word “knight,” we usually picture England, France, tournaments, castles, and King Arthur. For some reason, Ukrainian lands never seem to feature in this picture. It seems as though, after the decline of Rus', there was a centuries-long hiatus here, and then suddenly the Cossacks appeared out of nowhere. In reality, things were much more interesting. In this video, we'll talk about Ukrainian knighthood in the 14th–16th centuries. About the warriors who defended Ukrainian lands long before the Zaporizhian Sich emerged, fought against the Golden Horde, the Crimean Khanate, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow, studied military affairs in Europe, took part in the great battles of their time, and were an important part of the political and military elite.
