A network dedicated to alleged smuggling and money laundering was dismantled in Valparaíso after Customs officials and the Port Crimes Investigation Brigade (Briderpo) of the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI) thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than one million 10-peso coins out of the country. The coins were being transported hidden in a shipment declared as scrap metal and destined for China. The operation originated at an off-dock warehouse in Valparaíso, following an alert issued by the Customs Intelligence Unit regarding a suspicious export. Upon inspecting a container with 20 sacks that, according to the documentation, contained "red bronze," the teams discovered that the shipment concealed 10-peso coins in circulation mixed with other metal.
