If you think of interval training as simply "training that involves pushing yourself to your limits, escaping breath, and enduring pain," then you need to change that perception immediately. Interval training to expand aerobic power isn't about sheer willpower; it's "mathematics" that meticulously calculates the oxygen time lag. This video is the third in an eight-part series on the science of interval training. This time, we'll delve into the mechanism of maximizing the "maximum displacement of the aerobic engine (VO2max)," which is the lifeline for all endurance athletes. Exercise physiology indicates that the absolute requirement for VO2max development is "maximizing the time spent in a state of maximum oxygen uptake." However, our bodies have a "time lag of approximately two minutes" between the start of exercise and the arrival of maximum oxygen uptake. How do we overcome this "deadly two minutes"? This lecture will thoroughly dissect everything from the physiological rationale behind the 3-5 minute sprint time in Daniels' "I (Interval) Pace" to the mechanism by which "active rest," connecting rest periods with jogging, dramatically shortens the time lag for the next interval. As a further application, we will explain the design philosophy behind unconventional protocols such as the "30/30 protocol (short interval sets)" supported by the latest sports science, and "Cut-Down Interval (HIDIT)," which removes mental limitations by gradually decreasing distance.
