In my (short) time as a professional musical theatre actress and my (even shorter) time behind the casting table in Los Angeles, I've found that time and time again the person who gets cast is the person who can tell a story while singing (or dancing). Once you get to a professional level, everyone can sing and dance incredibly well-- it's a given and not necessarily an asset because EVERYONE can do it.
