How to build your own David Gilmour inspired Black Strat! Fender Stratocaster build start to finish
Can't afford a $10k+ Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Black Stratocaster? Well neither can I. Since they were discontinued sometime around 2019-2020 they have skyrocketed in price. When I looked at the market for a copy or "tribute" guitar, there was always something off. Either wrong pickguard, tremolo mount, neck radius, headstock design or had modern tuners etc... I decided to go ahead and build my own. How hard could it be? I was going to buy The Black Strat book by Phil Taylor, but even just the book is well over $100 on Amazon. I looked at a lot of photos and videos of both the Red and Black Strat and studied all the information I could find on the specifications. One noteworthy website with a lot of great information is gilmourish.com In this video I go through step-by-step on how-to build a Fender Stratocaster from start to finish. I'll list all of the parts below so you can build your own! Now it's not going to be an absolutely perfect clone, but dang close using off-the-shelf parts! You can even save money by shopping for used parts! If you prefer a more common 9.5 radius neck, or want locking tuners, or the road-worn look, then go for it! It's your guitar and build it the way you want it! I just wanted mine to be as close as possible to the NOS model without breaking the bank. (I'm not a big fan of artificial relic guitars in general) For a little more cost you can get a neck with a lacquer finish. Unfortunately, Fender does not offer the bodies in their nitro finish unless you order a whole guitar from their custom shop which you can do but will cost you at least three to four times as much to have one built. Will either of my two Strats be worth as much as any Fender Custom Shop guitar? Probably not. But I'm building them for me to play them, not to resell. That being said, if you want me to build you one send me a note, I do enjoy building stuff. (Go check out my main channel / @roadhardrestorations ) For Gilmour tones I highly recommend the following two YouTube channels. / @mustyguitar / @gilmourishofficial **One thing I forgot to mention, is that the NEW bodies do not have the holes for the pickguard, rear spring cover plate, or the cord jack ferrule pre-drilled so you will have to be careful marking and drilling those out. Fortunately, the strap button holes are pre-drilled, as well as all of the routing for wires etc.** Here are the part numbers. The first group applies to both the Black and Red strat, then below under the appropriate headings are the guitar specific parts. Just do a web search for the part number like I said in the video and find the best deal w/shipping on each item and save money. (The body for instance you can find for $50 less than the Fender site if you look around.)
