Models with the Exact Same Parts and Procedure (Direct Matches) ​Because the Audi A8 D3 is built on the Volkswagen Group D3 platform, the suspension layout, air strut configuration, and the steering knuckle itself are identical to: • ​Volkswagen Phaeton (3D) (2002–2016): Literally a twin under the skin. The suspension geometry, control arms, and the steering knuckle itself are identical and fully interchangeable (provided you match the wheel bearing diameter). • ​Bentley Continental GT / Flying Spur / GTC (First Gen, 2003–2011): Built on the same D3 architecture. The physical swap process is 100% identical. ​⚠️ WARNING on Part Interchangeability: Even though other Audi models (like the A4, A6, Q7, or A8 D4) look similar, their knuckles will NOT fit. Step-by-Step Replacement & Key Pitfalls • ​The front multi-link setup is notorious for one specific bolt, often nicknamed the "Pinch Bolt of Death." Here is how the replacement goes: • ​Step 1: Preparation & "Jack Mode" (15 mins) •  ​Crucial: Before lifting the car, you must lock the air suspension by enabling "Jack Mode" in the MMI menu. If you don't, the system will try to self-level while in the air, which can blow out the air bags. • ​Loosen the main axle nut while the car is still resting on its wheels. • ​Step 2: Brakes & Sensors (20 mins) • ​Remove the wheel, brake caliper, carrier, and brake rotor. • ​Carefully remove the ABS (wheel speed) sensor. These often seize in the aluminum knuckle.
