A strong smell of burning oil emanating from the Villalobos and Platanitos Rivers alarmed residents of Villa Nueva. Several people reported symptoms of poisoning and demanded answers regarding the possible chemical spill. The Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Lake Amatitlán Basin (AMSA), together with the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and the Ministry of Environment, took water samples to analyze its toxicity level.
