Over the Waves -Louis Nelson & Sammy Rimington 1987.
Over the Waves - Louis Nelson and his New Orleans Stompers. A very tasteful revival jazz band from New Orleans build around veteran trombonist Louis Nelson. Born in New Orleans (1902-1990) he lived all his live in the Crescent City and played with all the local jazz musicians and was mostly associated with trumpeter Kid Thomas Valentine. In this 1987 recording from Japan Louis plays the first few chorusses of Over the Waves, a tune made famous by clarinettist George Lewis. In his solo clarinettist Sammy Rimington pays tribute to George. The tune finishes in a good ensemble lead by trumpeter Wendell Brunies. Guitarist Danny Barker plays banjo in this tune, he blends beautifully in the rhythm group, not this usually overpowering banjo sound. Veteran bassist Chester Zardis ( 1917-2007) one of the original slap-style string players together with Butch Thompson and drummer Stanley Sheppard complete the rhytm section.
