Hayfield, Blooming Prairie to launch grades 7–12 football co-op this fall for safety, participation

Hayfield and Blooming Prairie schools have agreed to a cooperative football program for students in grades 7–12 beginning this upcoming school year, according to Hayfield Community Schools Superintendent Gregg Slaathaug. District leaders say the move is primarily about student safety, ensuring enough players for safe practices and games as participation numbers fluctuate year to year, while still providing a positive and competitive experience. The agreement is supported by both districts’ leadership, activities directors, and head football coaches. Key details include: the co-op will cover grades 7–12; practices and games will be hosted in both communities; uniforms will be shared; each school will still celebrate its own Homecoming and traditions; and the team will compete as the “Blooming Prairie Hayfield Football Team.” The co-op will remain in place for at least two years, with leaders monitoring participation and stating they’re willing to return to separate programs if numbers support it and it’s in student-athletes’ best interest.
