Jamala – My Lover (LIVE PERFORMANCE)

When I was in London, I was walking down Oxford Street once, and there was a street drummer playing there — on buckets, cans, and anything that could make a sound. I was completely enthralled. I liked his groove so much that I immediately recorded a video and sent it to Yevgeny Filatov with the words: “Zheka, look how cool this is!” It was he who suggested taking a piece of that raw, unprocessed drum loop as the basis for the drum part. And, of course, our love for Massive Attack — for these textures, rhythms, and sound — also, I think, is very much felt in this track. And the song itself is about a story that is probably familiar to every real fan. When at a concert it seems to you that the artist is looking right at you. Singing right at you. Sometimes you even come up with additional stories for yourself and, without exaggeration, you fall in love with him or her. It seems to me that without this there is no real connection between the listener and the artist. It was actually his idea to take a piece of that raw, unprocessed drum loop and use it as the foundation for the drum groove in the song. And of course, our shared love for Massive Attack—their textures, rhythms, and sonic world—is something I think you can really hear in this track. The song itself is about a feeling every true fan probably knows. When you're at a concert and it feels like the artist is looking only at you, singing only to you. Sometimes you even create your own story around that moment and, without even realizing it, fall for them. I don't think there can be a real connection between an artist and a listener without that feeling.
