Benefits, housing allowance, and healthcare benefits... the Dutch financial system offers various benefits for people with lower or middle incomes. According to the Dutch Benefits Agency (Dienst Toeslagen), this system is too complicated for many Dutch people. Research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) even showed that a growing number of Dutch people are experiencing financial difficulties because they have to repay benefits. But how do people who are new to the Netherlands, such as refugees, manage within this system? How do they know what they are entitled to and what their obligations are? Why does one refugee learn Dutch within a year, while for another it remains a nearly impossible task? In the new OOG series: "New Groningenrs | From refugees to residents," we follow four refugees as they try to find their way in Groningen during their integration process. What does this entail?
