Why Everyone Misses The Real Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang surprised us, disappointed us, and completely won us over, sometimes within the same hour. This is the honest story of what this famous Laos city is actually like when you get off the tourist trail. We have been traveling full time through Southeast Asia for months, and Luang Prabang is our very first stop in Laos after crossing overland from Thailand. We went in with big expectations, and the almsgiving ceremony was a reality check right out of the gate. So we ditched the guidebook, rented a scooter (with one small crash to report), hiked a secret trekking trail to Kuang Si Falls, and then took a longtail boat to Tat Sae Waterfall, a place so uncrowded we basically had it to ourselves. The UXO Visitor Center gave us one of the most sobering hours of this entire trip, and the Luang Prabang night market delivered some of the best street food we have found anywhere in Southeast Asia. Next stop is Vang Vieng by train, and if you want to see what that looks like, you know what to do.
