This Vintage Hamer Sunburst Has a Secret History!

This week we’re taking a deep dive into one of my most cherished vintage guitars — a 1978 Hamer Sunburst! Hamer Guitars are known as one of the first true boutique builders in the United States, founded right here in the Midwest. What started as my high-school obsession with my teacher’s Hamer Special turned into a years-long chase to find the real deal — an original late-’70s Sunburst in all its glory. Fast-forward to today, and this 1978 example revealed something I never expected… it once belonged to Grammy Award–winning musician Hank DeVito — legendary pedal steel guitarist and songwriter for Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, and many others.
