Why is the sky blue and sunsets red? The answer lies in Rayleigh scattering. Sunlight is white, composed of all colors. When it enters the atmosphere, air molecules scatter short wavelengths, like blue, much more than long wavelengths, like red. The law states that the intensity of scattering is proportional to the reciprocal of the fourth power of lambda. Result: the sky appears blue to us. At sunset, however, the light passes through a much thicker layer of air. Blue and violet are scattered almost completely outside the line of sight, and our eyes are mostly exposed to long-wavelength colors: red, orange, and yellow.
