Passport Seva transformation: India’s digital governance success story

On the occasion of the 14th Passport Seva Divas, the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted India’s transformation in passport services, making them faster, secure, and accessible for citizens across the country and abroad. The event marked the anniversary of the enactment of the Passports Act, 1967, and showcased the progress achieved through digital governance and the Passport Seva Programme. The Ministry highlighted the expansion of passport infrastructure from 77 Passport Seva Kendras in 2014 to over 500 functional centres today, including Passport Seva Kendras and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras. Passport issuance has also increased significantly, reflecting the growing aspirations of a globalising India. The focus remains on advanced technology, including Passport Seva Programme 2.0, Global Passport Seva, and biometric chip-enabled e-passports.
