Dutch Profiles: Joris Laarman

Joris Laarman uses the latest scientific insights in robotics, nano technology and digital techniques as well as traditional crafts to develop new products. For Laarman a good design starts with a good scientific experiment. Laarman is one of the key figures in the current wave of designers exploring the soft spot where cutting-edge technology and plain old beauty converge. With his graduation project Heatwave he rebelled against the than widespread sober, and functional looking objects, that were so typical for Dutch Design. Laarman made an -- over the top -- baroque radiator, because a radiator with lots of folds and swirls just works better in heat distribution. With his digital matter tables Laarman depicts his futuristic visions on the digital manufacturing of self-assembling materials. The rococo tables are constructed from foxels, small cubes that can be equipped with a micro-chip that is reprogrammable. http://jorislaarman.com/ CREDITS Commissioning editor Submarine: Geert van de Wetering Producer: Rosa van Tienen Research: Liselotte Francken Director: Marieke Helmus Camera: Pierre Rezus Sound: Steven van Dijk Editor: Niels de Roos Colour Correction: Editpoint Music/Sound Design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix http://www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA http://www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook   / dutchprofiles
