During those four days in July 1997, citizens across Spain took to the streets, following the lead of the town of Ermua, to protest the kidnapping and murder of 29-year-old Miguel Ángel Blanco. It was an unprecedented social mobilization with a clear objective: the defense of life against ETA's terror. This is a video journey through those days, narrated by some of its protagonists. From the then-mayor of Ermua, Carlos Totorika, to the sister of the murdered councilman, Maria del Mar Blanco: "My brother made it possible for democrats to take to the streets," Blanco states in this video report. Josu Bujanda, the current head of the Ertzaintza (Basque Police), also participates from Erandio (Bilbao), recalling with particular emotion when several Ertzaintza officers revealed their faces upon learning of the young man's death—an unprecedented gesture by the Basque regional police force.
