Cucullo Báez: el 14 de Junio fue clave en la resistencia de 1965
Rafael Báez Pérez, known as Cucullo Báez, considered the participation of the June 14th Revolutionary Movement (M14) in the 1965 civil war and in the face of the United States military intervention to be fundamental for the resistance to organize and succeed in creating the commandos that were established in the capital, particularly in the northern part of the city. He stated that despite the failure of Manolo Tavárez Justo's guerrilla movement in November 1963, the M14th maintained its political organization, and a significant number of the commandos created to defend sovereignty were based in the offices of M14th members. He admitted that Rafael Tomás Fernández Domínguez, leader of the Constitutionalist movement, and Francisco Alberto Caamaño trusted and frequently used the services of the M14th for some of their boldest decisions, including the takeover of the National Palace. The June 14th Military Bureau was headed by Fafa Taveras and Juan Miguel Román, and when the constitutionalist uprising broke out on April 24th, the leadership of that organization was discussing the reasons for the failure of Manolo's guerrilla movement. He explained that no one was prepared for the military coup of April 24th, and that initially, the June 14th Movement had doubts about the possibility of a coup against Donald Reid Cabral's triumvirate. He described how the resistance was organized in the northern zone, where he was assigned, along with Roberto Duvergé, Orlando Sánchez Díaz, and Amín Abel, and described the most important battles, especially those fought against the men of San Isidro and the Americans at the cemetery on Máximo Gómez Avenue. He said that the most terrible days of Operation Clean-Up were June 15th and 16th, when the Americans realized they could not control the country without making great sacrifices. He observed that the Americans intervened thinking they would control the country in a few days, but it took several months and they failed to achieve a surrender, instead forcing a negotiation imposed by the García Godoy government. Cucullo Báez Pérez was interviewed by journalist Fausto Rosario Adames on the program "¿Y tú…qué dices?" (And you…what do you say?), which airs daily on AcentoTV.
