Night Tapes are a London dream pop band whose heavily textured production and pulsing dark grooves are punctuated by the ethereal voice of Estonian singer Iiris Vesik. Housemates Vesik, Sam Richards, and Max Doohan spun a series of casual evening jam sessions into a legitimate project whose 2021 EP, Download Spirit, helped them secure a deal with the Nettwerk label. Their follow-up EP, 2023's Perfect Kindness, helped elevate Night Tapes' profile ahead of their next single "Drifting." A native of Tallinn, Estonia, Vesik had already enjoyed success in her home country, releasing a solo album on EMI, along with a handful of EPs. After moving to London, she teamed up with English musicians Richards and Doohan; the trio were living together and naturally fell into a pattern of musical experimentation. Occupying the more rhythmic end of dream pop, they paired dusky mid-fi guitars and synths with slow, throbbing dance grooves to create a unique sonic bed for Vesik's high, eerie voice. Calling themselves Night Tapes, they issued a brief three-track EP, Dream Forever in Glorious Stereo, in 2019. The more substantial Download Spirit arrived a year later as the band's momentum increased. In 2022, they joined the roster of Nettwerk Music Group which released the laid-back single "Humans," helping to deliver Night Tapes' music to a much wider audience. Singles like "Selene" and "Inigo" followed in the front half of 2023, both appearing on the band's next EP, Perfect Kindness. They followed it later that year with "All the Good Times Never Die," a collaboration with labelmates LEISURE, and their own single "Drifting." Night Tapes' first outing of 2024 was the breezy "Loner." Their first full-length album, portals//polarities was released on September 26 2025 under the Nettwerk record label. The album explores themes of identity, energy, and freedom, and reflects the band's experience of creating it in a shared house while also incorporating sounds from their travels. The music blends synth-pop, shoegaze, trip-hop, and ambient genres, often with unpredictable shifts between traditional song structures and more abstract, experimental sections.
