Unveiling Secrets of Amish Hope Chests: Jacob Bieber Legacy

This is the story of the dower/hope chests of the 18th Century Bieber Family in the Pennsylvania Dutch settlement of Berks County Pennsylvania; and how this family carried on their German traditions of creating wooden chests for the daughters in their community to store their hand-made fabric. It is also the story of the American Amish who came to America to escape religious persecution to create a culture of simplicity, humility, and obedience. They have used their horse-drawn buggies, a German-based dialect, and plain clothing to stay close to their religious principles and live apart from their English neighbors. Finally, it is story of woodworking and craftsmanship of the highest order by a family who created dower chests with unique decorations that are loved worldwide.
