He became the second player in history to throw a no-hitter in the 1998 Summer Koshien finals, garnering attention as the "Heisei Monster." He joined the Seibu Lions as the first pick in the 1998 draft. He won the most wins award and the Sawamura Award in his rookie year. He won bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics. He was named MVP of the World Baseball Classic in two consecutive tournaments, in 2006 and 2009. In 2006, he signed with the Boston Red Sox and became the first Japanese pitcher to win a World Series. He returned to Japanese baseball in 2015 and joined his former team, the Seibu Lions, in 2020. He retired after the 2021 season. He currently works as a sportscaster.
