Without a doubt, Mexicans are the only ones who return from the afterlife solely to eat. This video is a small sample of what is experienced in the municipality of Coatepec Harinas, State of Mexico. This tradition is known as "vela nueva" (new candle). The family prepares an offering to welcome their family member or loved one, who passed away months or even a year before preparing this altar. The family prepares for this holiday in advance, embroidering a tablecloth that becomes the centerpiece of the offering. Relatives, friends, acquaintances, tourists, and everyone else are welcome to experience this Day of the Dead celebration. Visitors bring wax candles or candles and give them to the family of the deceased. And since we're talking about a celebration, food is a must. Host families offer exquisite dishes, including: custard with white bread, liqueurs, pozole, tamales, and more.
