Лекция Андрея Зорина «Что такое “народ”, и кто и зачем его выдумал»

We invite you to a meeting with Oxford University Professor Andrei Zorin, whose interests include literature and state ideology, as well as the history of emotions. The lecture, "What is 'the people,' and who invented it and why?" will explore when, how, and why the idea of ​​"the people" as a community of people with a common destiny, shared history, and political will was created. We will examine three main concepts of "the people": political (citizens enjoying common rights, primarily voting rights, and subject to common laws); ethnocultural (compatriots bound by common origin, language, and tradition); ideological (residents of a country sharing certain values ​​and norms). Naturally, all three of these approaches interacted, competed, and combined with one another. We will briefly discuss how this occurred, using examples from European and Russian history of recent centuries. Andrey Zorin is a member of the Board of Trustees of FLAS Montenegro (https://t.me/liberalarts_mne) and a professor at Oxford University. He is also the curator of the Arzamas online university supercourse "History of Russian Culture" (https://arzamas.academy/university). He is the author of over 200 articles on Russian literature and culture of the 18th–20th centuries. He is the author of the books "Feeding the Double-Headed Eagle... Literature and State Ideology in Russia in the Last Third of the 18th – First Third of the 19th Century" (Moscow, 2001), "Where the Pheasant Sits...
