You give it a knock the way you've seen someone do it in a video once, but you couldn't tell a good sound from a bad one if your life depended on it. You grab the heaviest looking one, carry it to the car, and hope for the best. Saturday afternoon you cut it open at the table. The inside is pale pink instead of deep red. The rind is thick and white almost to the crust. The seeds are still white, not black. The first bite tastes like slightly sweet water. Six dollars, and half of it goes straight into the compost bin.
