How to Engage and Rotate the Core-Better Walking Technique with Dr Todd Martin
How to Engage and Rotate the Core-Better Walking Technique with Dr. Todd Martin. Learn how to consciously understand the rotations of your core used in proper posture and walking technique. Every movement we do while standing on 2 legs requires rotation of the waist as well as rotation controlled by the hip muscles. The waist rotation is divided into two separate divisions, upper and lower. Almost all people rely on subconscious control developed over time by repeating the same patterns over and over. Unfortunately, many people develop dysfunctional patterns that lead to increased wear and tear on the joints. This is understandable since no one is taught how to use the core properly. We are left to our own natural instincts, and sometimes that doesn't work out too well. One of my viewers with Parkinson's Disease asked if I would do this video to better help people understand how to rotate the core for better walking. People with Parkinson's have unique problems with walking, often shuffling, freezing up, and stooping over. I wonder how someone with Parkinson's might maintain better movement if they had conscious awareness of how to move and did not need to rely on previously engrained subconscious reflex. In the video I will explore horizontal rotation from the upper waist using the external obliques, which turn the body toward the opposite side. The left external obliques rotate the upper waist to the right and the right external obliques rotate the upper waist to the left. The lower abs, or internal obliques, rotate in the opposite direction from the external obliques. The right lower abs rotate the lumbar spine and pelvis back and to the right. The left lower abs rotate the lumbar spine and pelvis back and to the left. When we walk, sometimes the upper and lower waist are rotating in the same direction and sometimes they are rotating in opposite direction. The way we rotate determines how we walk. Proper rotation helps us maintain good posture, proper pelvic positioning, and low impact on the feet.
