ICE temporarily pauses vehicle traffic stops nationwide after fatal shootings | FOX 10 Phoenix

Immigration officers are changing how they do things by temporarily shifting away from traffic stops, effective immediately. ICE agents have routinely carried out vehicle stops as part of regular immigration enforcement operations, but recent deadly incidents have cast a shadow on the protocol. Sources tell FOX that ICE has ordered officers to temporarily pause most vehicle stops during immigration enforcement operations, except for the most serious criminal targets. Maine Sen. Susan Collins said, "There are sufficient critical questions to justify bringing non-emergency traffic stops to a halt." Maine Sen. Angus King noted, "I think that's a positive step." Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said, "I think Markwayne has been really smart to say let the cops do their job...They need to be safe." Sources say the break will be used to give agents additional training. Pete Aguilar, the House Democratic Caucus Chair said, "They aren't trained in many of the tactics that they are being asked to conduct." This comes after two fatal ICE-involved shootings in less than a week, including one in Texas and one in Maine. Some Democrats and Republicans agree that DHS does need to make changes, but not everyone is convinced the change will get to the root cause. Collins said, "There's no doubt that ICE needs to improve its performance, but those who are calling for ICE to be abolished altogether are ignoring absolutely vital safety work that ICE does." Aguilar said, "I'm also concerned that many of the changes that they're talking about, are probably temporary and just for a month .... these aren't substantive changes. And this isn't real accountability." ICE officials say agents will still use these stops to go after the most serious offenders out on the streets, and they know enforcement numbers will drop temporarily as agents undergo additional training.
