The Bank of Japan will soon decide on another interest rate hike. Amidst soaring oil prices due to the worsening situation in the Middle East, the April meeting decided to wait and see, stating that "there is no immediate urgency to raise interest rates." However, the trend of rising prices has become clear in the past two months, and it is already expected that the price increases for 20,000 food items this year will reach that number. Faced with this reality, concerns spread within the Bank of Japan that "if left unchecked, prices may rise more than expected." Therefore, at this meeting, the policy interest rate, currently at around 0.75%, is expected to be raised to around 1%, the highest level in 31 years. However, the yen is currently trading at around 160 yen to the dollar. Some believe that a single interest rate hike won't stop inflation and the yen's depreciation, and the focus has shifted to the Bank of Japan's statements at press conferences.
