Johann Andreas Bach (1713 - 1779): Capriccio über B.A.C.H.

Johann Andreas Bach is the 6th composer featured in our Bach-family mini-series. He was a nephew of JS Bach, one of the 5 sons of JSB's oldest brother Johann Christoph (with whom JSB stayed at first after the death of both his parents). Johann Andreas started out as oboist in Gotha, but then became organist back in Ohrdruf in 2 different positions after 1738. His name is linked to the "Andreas-Bach-Buch", a collection of keuboard works that his father J. Christoph initiated, which contains several of JSB's early keyboard compositions, among others. Today's piece is a capriccio in c minor, originally written for harpsichord, that toys with the musical "B.A.C.H." signature (B flat - A - C - B); this appears at the end of both parts of this otherwise freely composed and joyful piece.
