Kunan Poshpora: A story of mass rape in Kashmir | Maktoob

Kunan and Poshpora are two villages in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. In the year 1991, on a cold winter night of 23rd february, the security forces received a rumour of suspected militant activity in these two villages. So the Paramilitary forces of the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and the BSF (Border Security Force) descended upon Kunan and Poshpora to conduct a search operation. Personnel of the 4 Rajputana Rifles of the Indian Army started knocking on doors, men were separated from the women of the family. They were herded outside and subjected to harsh interrogations while the villages were being searched. Around 60 women, from a vulnerable thirteen-year-old girl to a frail eighty-year-old, were made victims of mass rape and barbaric torture by the security forces. Initial FIRs documented twenty-three cases of rape, but human rights organizations like Human rights Watch, estimated the number of survivors to be a shocking one hundred.
