ROSARIO ISLANDS Overnight: Why This Cartagena Trip Stole My Heart

Cartagena's Rosario Islands are crowded with day trippers but stay overnight and you'll find empty beaches and beautiful nature. Isla Grande in the Rosario Islands is one of those places most people only see on a day trip, arriving at a beach club for a few hours before heading back to Cartagena. But staying overnight completely changes the experience. The island has four beaches, two private beach clubs and two public ones that are completely free. Renting a chair on the public beach costs 20,000 pesos for the day and the atmosphere is far more relaxed, with none of the pumping music and crowds that the day tour scene brings in. Food is not cheap here but that's simply because everything has to be brought in from the mainland. A local breakfast of juice, coffee, an arepa and fruit runs around 30,000 pesos, street fritos go for 3,000 to 8,000 pesos and most main dishes start at 50,000 pesos. A fresh maracuyá juice will set you back around 15,000 pesos but with that view, it's worth every peso. Forget what you've read online about this being a cash-only, no-signal island. Cards are accepted everywhere and LTE data is available. Getting here is a different story though. Booking directly at the port is chaotic and confusing, especially with hundreds of day trippers all in the same space. A much better approach is going through a tour agency for transport only so you know exactly where to find your boat and who you're travelling with. Most of the coral surrounding the island is unfortunately dead but there are two spots still worth visiting and a golden hour mangrove tour at 4pm is one of the highlights of the island.
