In the spring of 1977, a flood occurred in the northern taiga, which was later discussed at length at weather stations, logging companies, and among geologists. The Bolshaya Synda River broke up ahead of schedule. The ice flowed unevenly, forming large sheets. A jam formed at a bend below the old winter road. The water rose almost four meters overnight. It inundated a lowland, an old clearing, two hunting lodges, and a section of road that was rarely used anymore. Five days later, the jam broke. The water rushed down, swept away bridges, carried away logs, capsized a logging barge, and eroded the bank. Then the river began to recede rapidly. And then the tops of houses appeared in the taiga.
