Unusual among the cat family, they live in groups called prides, consisting of 1 to 2 males and 3 to 6 females. Males can weigh over 250 kg, making them the second largest species in the cat family after the tiger, and hunting is mainly done by groups of females working together. Males develop a mane around the age of two.
