■ Why Is Meditation Called the ‘Exercise of the Mind’? Meditation is often misunderstood as a state of having no thoughts at all, but in reality, it is a discipline of noticing arising thoughts and emotions just as they are and returning to the present moment. Experts explain that meditation can bring about changes in specific areas of the brain that govern the mind, which is essentially a process of strengthening the muscles of the mind. In particular, the moment external stimuli diminish, our thoughts easily drift toward past regrets and future anxieties. Meditation is an exercise in bringing these thoughts, which tend toward the past or future, back to the ‘here and now.’ ■ People Who Transformed Their Bodies and Minds From a saxophone player who experienced a time of despair after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, to a person who could not control their anger in family relationships after retirement, and someone who desperately needed a way to comfort themselves amidst anxiety and lethargy—we follow the experiences of various people to see how meditation has brought about changes in their actual lives. From movement meditation, where one becomes aware of oneself while running, to meal meditation, where one focuses on the ingredients and sensations of food, and even breath meditation, where one pauses to examine oneself without being swept away by the emotions that arise at every moment.
