Patrice Lumumba: The Man the CIA Killed | Africa Good Life
Patrice Lumumba won the Congo's independence from Belgium, then was murdered after just two and a half months in power. This is the story of his exemplary life. In 1960 Patrice-Émery Lumumba became the first prime minister of an independent Congo — and the national hero of his people — because he was the first to understand that only the great mass of the exploited and oppressed could win complete independence. He refused to be bought. For that refusal he was hunted by an empire: Belgium, the Catholic Church, the United Nations, and the CIA, which sent three teams of killers to Kinshasa. On January 17, 1961, he was handed to the secessionist Katanga of Tshombe and Munongo and killed alongside Mpolo and Okito. Drawn from Ludo Martens' Marxist history of Lumumba's life — narrated, illustrated, and chaptered so you can follow the whole arc, from the colony to the martyrdom. ❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED • Who was Patrice Lumumba, and why is he the father of the Congolese nation? • How did Belgium and King Leopold II build the Congo "by fire and blood"? • What turned a cautious évolué into a radical African nationalist?
