We're 54 km away from Matera. A city, an abandoned village that few people know about, yet it has a truly fascinating history that deserves to be told. A remote place, immersed in the nature of the Badlands but with a strong connection to Turkey, to Cappadocia. The village of Craco was largely abandoned in 1963 following a landslide, partly caused by man. However, some residents remained here until 1980, when the Irpinia earthquake in November effectively rendered the place uninhabitable. The 2,500 residents who once animated Craco, with village life in the square, the cinema, and the sports field, were thus forced to move about 7 km away, where Craco Peschiera is today. The old village of Craco cannot be visited independently due to the precarious condition of the buildings, but tickets must be purchased on the official website. Tours have recently reopened after being suspended in August 2020 due to an arson attack.
