Hazard Communication Training | How to Read Chemical Labels and SDS Sheets (OSHA 1910.1200)
This video provides Hazard Communication awareness training, commonly called HazCom, for general industry employees who work with or near hazardous chemicals. This training explains OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, aligned with the Globally Harmonized System, and covers how to read a chemical label, recognize the nine GHS pictograms, understand a Safety Data Sheet, and respond correctly if exposed to a hazardous chemical. Unlike specialized safety roles, this training applies to nearly every employee at a facility, since cleaning products, adhesives, fuels, and other common materials qualify as hazardous chemicals under the standard. This is awareness-level training and does not cover chemical hazard classification, SDS authoring, or industrial hygiene exposure monitoring. What's covered in this video: An explanation of the purpose of OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, and the employee's right to know what chemicals they work around. How the United States aligned its labeling requirements with the Globally Harmonized System, or GHS, so hazard symbols look the same across facilities, states, and countries. The six required elements on every hazardous chemical label, including the product identifier, signal word, hazard statement, precautionary statement, pictogram, and supplier information. The difference between the signal words Danger and Warning, and why neither word means a chemical is safe to handle casually. A full breakdown of all nine GHS pictograms, including Flame, Corrosion, Skull and Crossbones, Health Hazard, Exclamation Mark, Gas Cylinder, Exploding Bomb, Flame Over Circle, and Environment. How hazard statements and precautionary statements work together to turn a warning symbol into a specific action plan, such as wearing gloves or using a product only outdoors. What a Safety Data Sheet, or SDS, is, why it contains more detail than a label, and how its 16 standardized sections stay consistent across every manufacturer. Where employees can locate their facility's Safety Data Sheets, whether through a physical binder or a digital database, before an emergency occurs. The first core rule of HazCom awareness: never use an unlabeled or improperly labeled container, and report it to a supervisor instead. The second core rule: always read the label before using any chemical product for the first time, even common items like cleaning spray. The third core rule: use whatever personal protective equipment the label or SDS requires, without exception. The fourth core rule: know the location of the nearest eyewash station or safety shower and the correct response if exposed to a hazardous chemical. A discussion of secondary container labeling requirements, explaining why a handwritten label such as "cleaner" does not meet OSHA's requirements unless used immediately by the person who filled it.
