Vincent Herring: The Saxophone Is My Voice Part 1
The first section of this two-part interview with Vincent Herring presents an insight into his musical studies and important mentors. His acceptance into the West Point Army Band at 17 allowed him to move to the greater NYC area where he was able to get a taste of the Big Apple’s jazz scene and continue his studies with Phil Woods, Eddie Daniels, and Pete Yellin. His early gigs as a sideman with Lionel Hampton, Horace Silver, Nat Adderley, and Cedar Walton led him to ultimately become an influential bandleader with over 20 albums of his own. Finally, Vincent talks about his approach to practicing.
