Scientists Just Found Scandinavian DNA in Roman Britain — Centuries Before the First Viking!

In 793 the textbooks say the Vikings arrived in Britain. The genome says otherwise. A peer-reviewed 2025 Nature study using a new method called Twigstats found roughly a quarter Scandinavian ancestry in a Roman-era skeleton from York, generations before the first longship. A larger 2026 dataset of more than 1,000 ancient British genomes deepens the picture.
